By the end of 2020, 17 hotel developments were under construction, which, according to the Office for Land, Public Works and Transport (DSSOPT), represent around 8,607 rooms that are to be added to the local market.
In total, all 177 projects comprise around 482,360 square meters of gross building space and will add around 4,234 light vehicle and 1,198 motorcycle parking spaces.
Sands China’s transformation of Sands Cotai into The Londoner includes 594 suites and 368 serviced apartments, while SJM’s Grand Lisboa Palace has 2,000 hotels in its three hotels and the nearby Lisboeta Hotel has 539 rooms.
All three properties are to be opened gradually from February this year.
By December 2020, around 20 hotel projects with around 2,268 rooms were in the design phase.
At the end of last year, a total of around 35,100 rooms were available in around 120 licensed hotels in Macau.
The average occupancy of the local hotel reached only 27 percent last year, after almost 91 percent had been reported in the previous year due to the pandemic effects on travel.
