The City of Spokane is working on the final part of a four-year public works project designed to make Sprague Avenue more attractive to both residents and investors.

“This project was so important to us because it’s really about connecting downtown with other parts of Spokane,” said Lars Gilberts, CEO of the university district.

This final round of East Sprague construction includes digging and laying new asphalt, sidewalks, and landscaping.

The improvements, including new lighting, also pave the way for new growth in Spokane’s university district.

“It allows us to build closer to Sprague. If we were to be able to attract new businesses and invest hundreds of millions of dollars in our community, they had to have new infrastructure,” Gilberts said.

This includes replacing centuries-old water and sewer pipes to help new businesses and homes take shape along Sprague.

The Sprague Avenue upgrade is part of the city’s ongoing investment in creating new vitality and jobs on the east side of downtown Spokane.

“Typically, every $ 1 million in public construction investment supports up to 20 high-paying jobs in our community,” said Nadine Woodward, Mayor of Spokane, during a press conference announcing the 2021 construction season.

However, companies in the four blocks that are affected by the Phase 2B project still need your company.

Customers of the Honest in Ivory Bridal Shop will have a front row seat for a summer construction, but the store’s manager is still applauding improvements to the East Sprague Corridor.

“It’s still very important that they keep coming back so we can keep growing and expanding and keep updating Sprague Avenue and making it as good as possible, attracting more people to this area,” said Honest at Ivorys Kenzie Quaintance.

“More importantly, please visit the other companies that are outside the impact zone. They are open, easily accessible, all have brand new streets and sidewalks. They are also important to see, ”added Doug Trudeau of Trudeau’s Marina.

Construction along Sprague Avenue is expected to take six months. Look for detours at the south end of the project as you approach Division Street.
