Almost 50 jobs are to be created in the UK’s largest building materials testing laboratory in Coventry near SOCOTEC Central.

SOCOTEC moved to new 50,000 square feet in Leofric Business Park in Progress Close, Binley earlier this year after being helped in the move by the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) Growth Hub.

The company provides technical expertise and testing, inspection and compliance services for a number of sectors including infrastructure, security compliance and sustainability, environmental compliance, building control and fire protection consulting.

SOCOTEC currently employs 80 people in its Coventry plant and is planning significant new hires in the coming months.

SOCOTEC Central recently won a four-year contract to support a local contractor on a transport project that involves performing specific conformity checks on 80 km of track between the Chiltern Tunnels and Long Itchington in Warwickshire.

The company is also on the verge of building one of the largest geotechnical laboratories in the UK, due for completion early next year.

Peter Godfrey, Director of Major Projects at SOCOTEC UK, said: “Since SOCOTEC is securing a major test project on site and is also building the geotechnical laboratory in parallel, this means that around 50 vacancies are available for prospective building materials technicians either on site or in the laboratory Environment in the Central.

“No previous knowledge is required for these entry-level positions and comprehensive training is offered so that everyone who is at the beginning of their professional career or who would like to alternate from their current job has a fantastic opportunity to learn and develop at SOCOTEC. Both laboratory and field technician positions require the employee to be familiar with significant manual handling activities to facilitate physical and mechanical testing of floors, aggregates, and concrete.

“SOCOTEC Central is primarily a training facility. We pride ourselves on providing a platform for people who want to work in the construction testing, inspection and compliance market.

“I started out as a budding technician myself and thought I would enter a chemical or medical laboratory in a ‘white lab coat’, which really wasn’t the case. It’s physically demanding, but interesting and incredibly rewarding, including competitive salaries and opportunities for overtime and career development. This is a great career prospect that doesn’t require a degree or higher education – it just takes people willing to work hard and learn on the job.

“Work on our additional state-of-the-art geotechnical laboratory facilities will begin in October to support all of the major infrastructure projects we are involved in across the UK. We have the infrastructure, we just have to set it up and find the next generation of materials experts.

“The Growth Hub is helping us with our recruiting drive and assisting us with our move by merging our offices in Southam and Daventry and providing valuable networking opportunities.

“We’re running a series of assessment days over the coming months, which is a great opportunity for anyone interested in SOCOTEC to come and see the lab and talk to everyone from the technician to the director.”

Justine Chadwick, Account Manager at CWLEP Growth Hub, said the CW Employment Solutions website is a great resource for companies like SOCOTEC Central.

“We launched CW Employment Solutions for employers, recruiters, job seekers and graduates to connect, find jobs, post and access the wealth of support that is available across the region – and it’s proving to be great Success, ”she said.

“The Growth Hub supports SOCOTEC in its recruiting offensive and the high number of vacancies is evidence of the success in winning new orders and expanding its infrastructure.”
