A construction company from the northeast has been selected as the preferred contractor for a large housing project in the area.
Gateshead-based Tolent will lead the construction of 132 houses on the Riverside property in Sunderland, the first of 1,000 planned houses on the former Vaux Brewery property near the city center.
The project calls for Tolent to use modern construction methods, renewable energies and smart technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of development.

Having been selected as the preferred construction partner by Sunderland City Council, Tolent is expected to begin work on the site in the next few weeks.
The Vaux neighborhood will host the Sunderland Future Living Expo 2023, which aims to showcase Sunderland’s new homes and emerging lifestyle offerings.
Graeme Miller, Chairman of Sunderland City Council, said, “We are very pleased to have selected Tolent as our preferred partner to drive our flagship residential project in Riverside Sunderland. The developments at Riverside Sunderland will be world class and Tolent is a fantastic local resident partner capable of building the stunning properties we want to develop on the site.
“We are innovative with this concept, using modern construction methods, renewable energies and smart technologies that match our ambitions for a low-carbon and smart city and enable our future generations to learn how to build the houses of the future.
“We are proud to be working with Tolent – a company that delivers significant social value – to ensure these new homes deliver the greatest possible local benefit.”
The contract with Tolent is expected to be confirmed in November. As part of the program, the company will provide over £ 17 million in activities of social value, including supporting local workplaces, training and internships, and a commitment to invest in regional supply chains and work with local community groups.
Andy McLeod, CEO of Tolent, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as the preferred construction partner for a transformative project for the City of Sunderland. The program represents a unique opportunity to redefine the way we build homes in the region and will allow us to teach new skills to local people and support the growth of new regional supply chains.
“It will also be great to be back at Riverside Sunderland after our work on the award-winning Beam Riverside, which we completed in 2019. We look forward to working with the team again. “
Construction work for the development is scheduled to begin in November and the first apartments will be completed by May 2023.
The housing is part of a comprehensive master plan for Riverside Sunderland that will include residential, commercial and recreational developments.
It is hoped that the entire program will double the inner city resident population and increase employment by 50%.
