A new Republican report through a Senate subcommittee concludes that the Biden administration is spending at least about $ 2 billion to suspend construction of the wall on the southern border despite an ongoing migrant crisis.

The report by the minority staff of the Subcommittee on Government Operations and Border Management of the Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs found efforts to suspend or end wall construction projects in the Department of Defense have cost between $ 1.8 billion and $ 2 billion and the administration is spending $ 3 million every day.

DHS ENDED CONTRACTS FOR 31 MILES OF TEXAS BORDER WALL CONSTRUCTION IN THE LAREDO SECTOR

“These interim results show that the Biden government’s efforts to stop the construction of border walls are a significant waste of taxpayers’ money,” the report said. “At the time of this writing, the Biden government has paid border wall contractors at least $ 2 billion and has calculated that they will not build the border wall.”

“That $ 2 billion comes straight from the DOD’s budget, and the Biden government’s continued squandering of these funds poses national and border security risks,” it said.

Biden finished the Trump-era wall project, which built 450 miles during the Trump administration, on his first day in office, with hundreds of miles still funded and contracts pending. Biden ordered a review of the federal government’s obligations.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has since announced a plan of what to do with the funds allocated to the Wall, while the administration rerouted funds transferred from Pentagon accounts to the original projects for which they were used. The Department of Defense (DOD) has received $ 10 billion for border wall construction and related projects.

After being ordered to suspend construction, the committee found that the Department of Defense initially incurred $ 6 million a day in “suspension costs” but was reduced to $ 3 million after layoffs. The money will be spent on “Make Safe and Site Security” projects.

DHS ANNOUNCES PLAN TO USE MONEY FOR THE BORDER WALL TO RESOLVE SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

“This means the federal government is paying the contractors on these seven projects $ 3 million a day to drive to the project sites and guard the unused pallets of steel and other building materials,” the report said.

To arrive at the $ 2 billion figure, the report uses the DOD’s estimates presented in court documents. These estimates include “suspension costs” for the project that the subcommittee staff say either “significantly underestimated” the daily provision of $ 3 million per day or was not fully accounted for.

“If the $ 3 million daily accrual is a separate cost that is not included in the broader DOD estimate of termination costs, then the total suspension cost will still be significantly higher than the estimate provided by the Biden Administration and DOD submitted to the courts, ”it says.

According to the report, the total amount spent could be due to uncertainties about plans for contracts acquired by DHS, questions about the Pentagon’s estimate of suspension costs, and the 12- to 18-month time limit to withdraw from the contract.

Pentagon spokesman Chris Mitchell told Fox News that the Department of Defense “will not make public comments on matters that are in active litigation or settlement talks.”

Senator James Lankford, R-Okla., The leading Republican on the subcommittee, criticized the Biden administration for the results.

“It is absolutely absurd that Americans should pay contractors to guard metal gates that President Biden refuses to install because he wants to ‘study’ the wall,” he said in a statement. “The stubborn refusal to spend funds approved on the wall does not mean ‘enforcing’ the law. It ignores the law and ignores the very real national security concerns arising from illegal entry across our very open southern border. For years I have been calling for federal waste, but the Biden administration is literally going broke with this nonsense.

GEORGE P. BUSH WARNS THE BORDER CRISIS IS “NOT SUSTAINABLE” WHILE HE SUEDING BIDEN OVER THE WALL AND CHOSEN TO ESCAPE

The report says the estimate of exactly how much will be wasted could be higher because it does not take into account the Department of Homeland Security accounts as well as other costs related to some of the DOD projects.

“These estimates do not include an analysis of the DHS accounts and therefore do not reflect the full extent of wastage by the Biden administration, nor do they include the day-to-day running costs associated with the suspension of projects the DOD funded through its 284 accounts “, It says in the report. “Given these reservations, President Biden is likely wasting significantly more taxpayers’ resources than is estimated in this report for his efforts to halt the construction of the border wall.”

The Republican report also assesses its results against the backdrop of the ongoing crisis on the southern border, which saw more than a million migrant encounters in fiscal 2021 and more than 188,000 in June alone.

“Our border guards are doing their best to secure our border, but they need additional barriers, roads and technology to keep us safe,” Lankford said. “Instead, President Biden is paying professional contractors $ 2 billion and more to babysit metal while we have seen a 20 year history of migrants crossing our open border.”

The report comes just as the Department of Homeland Security announced it had canceled contracts covering more than 50 kilometers of border wall construction in the Laredo sector of Texas.
