On Friday, FERC documents showed that Venture Global (VG.N), opens new tab received approval to build its CP2 LNG project in Louisiana.

CP2 would be the U.S.’s largest LNG export facility and help it stay the world’s largest exporter.  It might also make Venture Global the largest U.S. LNG company.

A final environmental evaluation confirms the 28 million metric tons per year plant is in the public interest.

Venture Global received authority to build the facility, but FERC undertook an extra air quality environmental evaluation after a court order.

The study recommended project continuation.

“Neither the presumptive stay …nor the Commission’s regulations barring construction for a limited period pending rehearing will apply upon issuance of this order,” officials added.

On Friday, CEO Mike Sabel said the company will begin on-site construction after federal permissions.

In August 2024, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit overturned FERC approval of competitor LNG exporter NextDecade’s (NEXT.O) new production project at the Port of Brownsville, Texas.  After the court verdict, FERC reviewed CP2’s air quality impact.

CP2 has pitted the oil sector against environmentalists who want to prohibit Gulf Coast LNG developments.
